Our mascot. Our hero. Our raccoon.

Meet Recon the Raccoon

Born in a returns bin. Raised on markdown stickers. Personally offended by full price. Recon is the ScoreDeals mascot, and he has been digging for deals since before he could walk.

The origin story

Recon was found as a baby in a store's returns bin, wedged between a waffle maker and a single left sneaker. Nobody knows how he got there. The store tried to process him as an open-box item, but he didn't have a receipt.

He grew up behind the stores, learning everything a young raccoon needs to know: which bins get emptied on Tuesdays, which stickers mean “marked down,” and which ones mean “marked down again.” He learned to read from clearance tags. His first word was “clearance.” His second was “more.”

Then one night he followed a trail of orange markdown stickers through an open back door and found the clearance aisle. Whole shelves of it. Under the lights. With prices. He sat down right there in the middle of the aisle and cried a little. Then he got organized.

These days Recon digs through sale pages instead of bins. It's cleaner, it smells better, and the thrill is exactly the same. He found a home at ScoreDeals, where his job is cheering on the good finds and mourning the ones that got away.

A quick note on who does what: Recon is our mascot. A real person checks every price at the store and writes every take on this site. Recon mostly supervises, eats snacks, and takes credit.

Known personality traits

You'll see these around the site. Consider yourself warned.

He never pays full price

Full price isn't a number to Recon. It's a personal insult. He will wait, watch, and refresh until the price comes to its senses. When it finally drops, he celebrates like he won the championship, usually while tangled in his own receipt.

He overcommits on gifts

Recon has never met a person he couldn't buy a present for. Best friend, neighbor, the mail carrier, a guy he waved at once. Every holiday he ends up carrying a tower of boxes and insisting he has it under control. He does not have it under control.

He mourns every dead deal

When a deal expires, Recon takes it hard. He holds a small service in the Deal Graveyard, says a few words, and dabs his eyes with a handkerchief he keeps for exactly this purpose. Then he goes back to work, because somewhere a better price is waiting.

He is useless before coffee

Recon is up at dawn every day to see what went on sale overnight. Awake is a strong word, though. Until the first giant mug kicks in, he is mostly fur, yawns, and the vague sense that something is 40% off somewhere.
